Each chapter contains a list of key resources, including links to classic JLC and PDB articles, relevant sections of the 2009 and 2012 IRC building code, and other essential industry guidance.

The JLC Field Guide provides a single-source reference that can be accessed on a mobile tablet or computer to serve as a guide for subcontractors, training for crew members or as a reference for planning a project. The first installment available now covers best-practice construction of outdoor wood decks.

Developed as an interactive module, the tool is divided into five chapters (preventing deck collapse, foundations, framing, materials and railing). Navigation can be linear (for example, when used for training), or users can drill down to topics using the Contents menu. At each Contents subheading, however, users should explore further using the Next button or on-screen buttons to reveal new  layers of information.

In addition to collecting practical knowledge from the JLC and Professional Deck Builder archives, this interactive reference tool connects users to established industry guidelines, including the 2009 and 2012 International Residential Code and important reference documents. Each chapter also contains a list of key resources, including links to classic JLC and PDB articles and other important information sources.

Free access to the Field Guide is made possible by the generous support of sponsors, but users do need to fill out a registration form first.   To access the first installment of the JLC Field Guide, click here.
