A committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is working on a proposed engineering standard for designing for “tsunami loads and effects,” according to a Northwest Public Radio report (“Structural Engineers Developing Tsunami Design Code For Coastal Buildings,” by Tom Banse. Light wood-frame structures such as houses have zero chance of standing up to the huge force of a tidal wave, the story notes; so the committee is focusing on big public and commercial projects.
