According to NASA, 2013 was the driest year California has seen in 119 years, and 2014 is shaping up to be even worse. NASA's dramatic "before-after" photo demonstrates the severe conditions that are beginning to curtail development and impact the daily life of Californians (see "Water-use restrictions take effect in California; daily fines possible," LA Times, 7/30/14). And the increased risk of wildfire is forcing officials into a tighter fiscal corner (see "California braces as drought sparks early fire seasonan impact on building codes," Sacramento Bee 7/28/14). This will likely spell even tighter building codes for the future than those already coming into play (see "Communities Mandate the Removal of Wood Roofing").
