The long-awaited housing recovery has been slow. No news here, but there are some interesting developments that builders and remodelers of all shapes and sizes should understand. Builder's John McManus parses recent Metro Study data to explain the economic, demographic, geographic and business conditions underlying the 2017 housing outlook.

" ... the Boud forecast for housing starts in 2017 and 2018 [shows] a steady, glacial upward push to heights well below last-decade peaks ... "But there are a couple "disrupters," starting the "big, honking unknown and possibly menacing variable is what the Federal Reserve does to rates for borrowed money, and how that flows through to mortgage interest rates." The other possible disrupter to housing demand is a shift in household incomes as Boomers retire out of the labor force faster than early-in-their-career Millennials are moving in.
