While the International Residential Code contains a number of prescriptive design details for decks, none of the versions currently address guard-post installation. Deck builder Matthew Breyer, who works in several municipalities in Pennsylvania that have adopted different code versions, has worked out a set of best practices for installing guardrail posts that have performed well, pass muster with a range of inspectors, and don't require a lot of expensive metal hardware. This last bit allows his company to stay competitive with the "fly-by-nights" that consistently try to underbid him.
