A Carpenter's Favorite iPhone Apps

Though they look real, the keys on this BuildCalc app are images on the phone’s touch screen (left). The built-in help feature makes it easier to learn new functions by guiding users through unfamiliar calculations (right).

My Measures allows users to put dimensions on photos they take with the phone. The resulting image can be exported to a computer, retained on the phone, or e-mailed from the job site.

TimeCapture can be used to track work time and assign it to customers, projects, and tasks. Each record contains a space for notes and a place to attach photos taken with the phone.

The free Google Maps app is a convenient alternative to a stand-alone GPS unit. It uses the phone’s GPS to track locations.

RedLaser is an easy way to check pricing. It scans an item’s bar code (left), looks it up on the Web, and then provides a list of vendors and prices (right).
