Job Log: Adding a Walkout Basement - Images 8-14

After slipping the I-beam into its slightly oversized pocket, the author shimmed it tight to the floor framing above.

Before removing the temporary lintel, the missing course of brick was relaid.

A day of excavating and grading left a flat, accessible site for the concrete-cutting subs.

Once the opening was cut, the crew broke the concrete slabs into manageable pieces.

The footing below the patio door was dropped almost 4 feet to reach below the frost line; a one-sided form was used to pour that section of the foundation.

Access was limited, so the crew used a bucket on a skid-steer loader to place the concrete for the footings; the walls were pumped.
