Retrofitting a Steel Header

Plans called for replacing the window and the door in a rowhouse's structural back wall with a single three-panel slider. Note the exposed "American bond" brickwork: a single row of header bricks for every five courses of stretchers, a technique that ties the inner and outer wythes of brick together.

After removing the door and window, a carpenter begins chipping away enough of the inner wythe of brickwork over the openings to install a section of C10x20 steel channel, the first half of the header assembly.

The outer wythe of brick will remain in place during the installation to maintain the wall's structural integrity.
