Stabilizing a Hillside Foundation, Images 1-9

A narrow foundation cut into the hillside carried only about a third of this home’s floor span. The downhill portion was built over a grade beam that was gradually moving downhill.

A hodgepodge of crude shoring did nothing to arrest the process.

Structural columns moved along with the grade beam, making a total structural failure imminent.

Because of the steep slope and difficult access, the helical piers and extension shafts were driven using a custom-made steel frame to support the auger head.

Extension shafts used in the drilling.

A custom-made steel frame supported the auger head.

An excavator parked at the top of the hill provided hydraulic power.
