Framers and deck builders struggling to position long joists can give themselves an extra hand with Joist Jaws by Grabber. These devices clamp onto the ends of truss-type, dimensional, or engineered lumber joists. They can be used to line up the far end of a joist when it's being pulled flush against a mudsill, to support a joist flat against a beam when fitting a joist hanger in place, or to align rafters with a ridge beam. They're sold in pairs for about $60. Grabber, 800/477-8876.
