There is a gradual but clear trend in both the new construction and remodeling markets toward creating significant outdoor living environments – larger, more elaborate deck structures, innovative hardscaping and landscaping solutions, outdoor kitchens, and enchanting water features. This trend has gone hand-in-hand with the trend in home design toward bringing the outdoors inside with the increased use of glass and larger openings that allow whole walls to open to the outdoors. More and more Americans are embracing the natural environment from the comfort of their own homes.
According to the latest Home Design Trends Survey by the American Institute of Architects, so-called "outdoor living" and blended indoor/outdoor spaces tops the list for the most-desired home features, with 72% of firms reporting increased activity for outdoor living projects and 58% for blended spaces.
This increasing desire among homeowners for cohesive, well-designed backyard spaces offers new areas of specialization, and enormous business opportunity, for a wide range of building professionals, including builders, remodelers, deck builders, pool contractors, and landscape designers and contractors.
To this end, the editors of Pool & Spa News, Remodeling, Professional Deck Builder, ProSales, and JLC have brought you Backyard Living, a virtual magazine designed to bring you a unique perspective on the outdoor living market.
