If you just looked at the numbers above, you probably wouldn't think that Craig Knott's company is anything special. Like roughly 90% of remodeling companies, Houseworks Unlimited does less than $1 million in annual volume. But amid fears that the “little guy” is in danger of being squeezed out of an industry moving closer to consolidation, Knott is a reminder that you don't have to have a big volume to make a difference.

Active in the Washington, D.C., metro chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) since 1994, he played a large role in founding the mid-Maryland chapter in the fall of 2003. Knott served as president for the past two years, and the chapter now has more than 40 members.

“I like to help,” he says. “I hope I can make a difference.” Even though his term as president has ended, Knott has stayed involved in the chapter, serving on committees. He also hopes to get the chapter involved with Rebuilding Together and Habitat for Humanity.
