U.S. Census Bureau statistics show that the percentage of new homes that came with decks reached a peak of 27% in 2007 and 2008, but then dropped to 22.2 % in 2012. Since then, the percentage has steadily increased, and last year 23.7% of the roughly 780,000 single-family homes built in the U.S. included decks, according to a recent NAHB report. Among other findings, the report finds that the average size of a deck that is included in a new home package is 230 square feet, though this varies by region. In states such as Texas and Louisiana (where decks are relatively uncommon to begin with), the average size is 170 square feet, while in states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, where decks are a more common option, the average size is over 275 square feet. Decks continue to be a popular remodeling project, too, as nearly 25% of NAHB remodelers say that they built at least one deck addition in 2016.
