Expanded Medicare benefits might increase spending on universal design, according to new report from the New York Times.
Officials announced this spring they reinterpreted the definition of "supplemental benefits" for Medicare Advantage, opening the door for insurers to include things like home aides, adult day-care programs, and "home safety devices and modifications, like grab bars and wheelchair ramps."
According to Paula Span of the NYT, Medicare Advantage accounts for about a third of the population insured by Medicare.
"This will potentially help people stay in their homes longer and not have to go to institutions" said Seema Verma, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in an interview with Span.
