Rhode Island received $12.4 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to remove lead paint and combat health risks associated with lead paint exposure. The funding will target projects in Woonsocket, R.I., Pawtucket, R.I., and Central Falls, R.I., according to the Providence Journal.

“Lead poisoning remains a real problem that affects too many kids, and it’s taken a great deal of effort to create and fund these kinds of grants,” Sen. Jack Reed, ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, said in announcing the awards.

“This grant will get at the root of the problem by identifying families that need help, removing lead hazards in the home, and making properties safe for kids today, and future generations,” Reed added. “There is both a moral imperative to get this done and an economic one, because making our communities safe from lead saves taxpayers in the long run.”

Rhode Island Housing will receive $8.4 million, with the City of Woonsocket receiving the remainder.
