Many homeowners believe that attempting a renovation project around the house by themselves can be a serious way to save money. Analysis by Porch shows this can mean serious injury, too. The analysis reveals that even the most innocuous repairs and tools can have painful, long-term repercussions. Porch finds that basic tools, such as ladders, nails, screws, and even garden tools pose serious hazards for homeowners.
The analysis found the ladder is the most dangerous home repair tool, resulting in nearly 200,000 emergency room visits per year, killing 300 people annually. Hardware nails and screws were found to be the second riskiest tools, causing 124,000 ER visits annually with a 1 in 26,15 chance of injury.
The Porch analysis found those attempting their own renovation projects were most likely to hurt their digits. Fingers accounted for the greatest percentage of injuries and were most likely to be cause by a bench or table saws. Men between the age of 50 and 59 were the most at risk for home repair-related ER visits.
