Hammer & Hand is a contractor with offices in both Portland, Oregon, and Seattle that builds some interesting projects and does a great job posting photos and videos to its Field Notes blog to document the process. In the latest post, site supervisor Will Smithson describes an extensive backyard makeover that involved carving a new pool into a sloped backyard. The footings for the pool are massive, and the Ultrablock retaining wall is pretty cool (who knew that they could be stained?). But one of the smaller details in the project is also one of the more interesting: the small deck off of the new cabana (shown in the photo), which forms a perfect semicircle around the fire pit and has an unobtrusive outdoor shower at one end. It's simple but elegant and very well-crafted.
