If you're still notching your 4x4 guard posts to fit around the rim joist with the idea that this creates a stronger, more 'carpentry-like' connection, you better think again. Or, better yet, read Glenn Mathewson's latest NADRA blog post about pending proposals to the IRC that will directly affect deck builders. Not only would notched guard posts be eliminated under Proposal RB185-19, connections between guard posts and outer joists or rims would need to be reinforced by blocking or other means to the deck framing to prevent rotation under load.
