The Seattle house designed by Susan Jones of atelierjones is a dramatic modernist take on a timber house. Constructed with cross-laminated timber panels, this house, built by Seattle-based builder Sloan Ritchie, was covered in a June JLC article "Building with Cross Laminated Timber."
The exterior of the timber panel home was clad in shou sugi ban - a Japanese process for treating cedar siding with fire, leaving a charred finish that renders the wood more fire-resistant and termite resistant. The charred boards reportedly last well over 50 years without any maintenance. (The process can be seen in a pair of videos below.)
