It doesn't take long for a leaking dishwasher to ruin a kitchen floor, especially if the floor is hardwood. That's why Matt Risinger installs a custom metal pan plumbed with a drain to the outside before the dishwasher gets fitted. In this Instagram video, Risinger explains how he fills the drain's P-trap to air-seal it (mineral oil won't evaporate like water), and screens the outlet to make sure that insects and rodents can't get in. And because the countertop height is 38 inches rather than 36 inches in this kitchen, there's room for PVC runners to lift the dishwasher up over the front edge of the pan and avoid damaging it during installation.
