The homeowners selected this 6x6-foot inlay kit. Installing it flush required routing 1/2 inch from the tops of the joists underneath to account for the thickness of its PVC backerboard.
The contrasting color used for the design on the upper deck is echoed on the stairs and in the borders around the upper and lower decks.
The deck was built along with the garage, not as a retrofit project, which allowed the railing posts to be incorporated into the roof framing. The deck framing consists of sleepers screwed to tapered joists. Note the blocking, which was installed to support the meeting boards that run perpendicular to the field in the center of the upper deck.
The finished garage-top deck covers 1,100 square feet.
