Slideshow: Outside the Shack

Looking Southwest

This view shows the main volume of the house with the screen porch on one side and the "garage" structure on the other.

Three Volumes

Looking northeast, the three major volumes step down in size with the room that houses the composting toilet in the foreground.

Looking North

A small grove of black cherry offers a bit of protection on the southwest side of the shack. Two neighboring shacks sit in the dunes to the right.

Driveway and "Garage"

A patch of sand in front of the wood pile acts as a driveway for the dune shack. The "garage" in the foreground is storage for tools, materials, and dry wood.

Back Entry

Steps lead up to a small deck for the back entry into the dune shack. Clothes drying on the line signal that the shack is occupied. The short ladder is for filling the black plastic container that acts as a solar water heater.

Shady Spot

An open sitting area under the black cherry trees offers residents some cool shade on hot summer days.

The Garage

A small room with a shallow pitch roof serves as storage for dry firewood.

Rinse Your Feet!

A colorful tub filled with water at the bottom of the front steps lets folks rinse the beach sand from their feet before going inside.

Screened Porch

A narrow porch wraps the north side of the shack. Too small for sitting, it serves to shade and ventilate the main part of the shack.

Creative Shingling

Instead of having the siding cut at an angle, the carpenter stepped the shingles up the roof plane, probably due to lack of a quick and easy way to cut the shingles without electricity.

Forgotten Weave

Installers just brought the sidewall shingles to the corner of the toilet room, leaving the seam open. These corners will have to be repaired soon to ward off weather intrusion.

Shack and Pump

This view looking southwest shows the proximity of the pump (covered with a white bucket at the extreme right) to the shack. Filled water containers have to be carried up the grade to the shack.
