The laundry room is something that is present in the majority of homes across the country. Until recently, the space has been an afterthought in aesthetic appeal and functionality. However, as Christina Poletto writes for Boston.com, social media sites like Pinterest and celebrity influencers have made the laundry room a more popular space for design and renovation.

What's generally a utilitarian spot has come a long way from being dim and cramped to a more usable and appreciated area full of color, texture, light, and intelligent storage. Today's upgraded laundry rooms may even feature TVs, ceiling fans, and built-in speakers that can play an audiobook or Spotify playlist above the whir of the dryer.

"It has become the new powder room of design," said Kansas City, Mo., designer Jennifer Bertrand. "It used to be only the guest bathroom and kids' rooms that people took risks in, but now the laundry room is starting to have the same air of flair."

Poletto includes perspectives from numerous designers on how current designs are livening up the laundry room. Custom cabinetry tailored to customers' taste can incorporate various design elements meant to organize, such as tilt-out hampers, fold-out ironing boards, and open and closed storage. In the luxury market, Poletto finds that custom cabinetry that conceal everything and built-in folding stations are popular. Colorful tiles and natural light are also popular among laundry room renovations.
