While "Fixer Upper" may no longer be airing new episodes on HGTV, that's not stopping Joanna Gaines from spreading her design tips. The former HGTV star recently released her book, Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave. The book is dedicated to helping find one's unique style. The Cheat Sheet read the book and presented the main takeaways from Gaines as they related to designing a dining room.

Gaines suggests that lighting is all-important in a dining room space. A chandelier can add style to any room, but only if designers pay close attention to the ceiling height and room size. Gaines also suggests incorporating elements that flow naturally in the dining room. Consider repurposing a formal dining room that is rarely used or build out a breakfast nook as a primary dining area instead.

Gaines says designers shouldn't get so caught up in the aesthetics of a space that the functionality of the room is forgotten. Form should not be place over function and the perfect design combines a relaxing feel with a space that is suitable for eating as a family.

Gaines also says the separation of the dining room from the rest of the house allows more creativity to be applied in decor, colors, and patterns. Artistic wallpapers or whimsical light fixtures are just two of the many ways Gaines recommends inserting more creativity into a dining space.
