The Oregonian is no different, and the publication set out to answer the questions "what popular home design looks should continue into the new year and which ones should stop right here in 2018?" The modern farmhouse style for interiors is still going strong, says experts at Houzz, the online home remodeling and design source. And more builders are turning to tried-and-true, board-and-batten exteriors to add texture and interest to an otherwise flat facade.

Industrial-style doors and windows are now being adopted as dividers between interior rooms. They create an open feeling, add a stylish element and provide a little noise control.

Decorative tile that rises from the countertop to the ceiling, even behind floating shelves and range hoods, creates an eye-catching feature wall, say the design professionals on Houzz.
Time to Go: Microfiber Upholstery
Affordable, microfiber home furniture is practical and durable, but it can make a room look dated and cheap. Stick with linen, leather, pleather, tweed and canvas-type fabrics, say Realtor.com sources.
Time to Go: Industrial Kitchens
Realtor.com says it's time to flip the switch on cage lighting and aggressively exposed pipes and beams that don't feel authentic or inviting. Instead, install matte metallics like soft gold in hardware, faucets and lighting fixtures.
