As an alternative to the fiberboard sheathing and 2x4 wall construction used in 'The Worst-Built House in America', Matt Risinger offers up several different wall assembly options that provide better performance and can be installed using basically the same techniques. The most basic upgrade is to use OSB or plywood rather than fiberboard sheathing, and then wrap the envelope with a weather-resistive barrier. Other wall assembly options include different insulation products and 2x6 rather than 2x4 construction, in conjunction with various types of non-insulated and insulated ZIP System sheathing. For all of these good/better/best wall assemblies, Risinger compares the construction details, effective R-values, and approximate material costs.
