When a 22-ft. long LVL beam on a house that you built 6 years ago develops a 3/4-inch sag, is that a warranty issue? Tim Uhler was faced with this question recently, and in this Awesome Framers video he explores the structural issues that might have resulted in the sag, as well as the issues of liability and responsibility in this situation. Even though the beam wasn't technically 'failing', Tim decided to straighten the LVL by jacking it up and temporarily supporting the floor system, removing the joist hangers and cutting back the I-joists, and adding another LVL to the assembly. In the process, mistakes were made.
