Look How Far We've Come
JLC has always tried to stay closely in tune with every phase of building technology from tools and materials to construction technique and building science. In the December 2012 issue, long time JLC staff member, Tim Healey, put together a time line that traces some of the changes in the building industry since JLC's humble beginnings as New England Builder Magazine in 1982.
While some items such as an article touting "computers with a whopping 5 MB of storage" seem almost comical by today's standards, in the early 1980's NEB was discussing issues such as "improperly installed vapor barriers causing mold" that are eerily similar to problems we still face over three decades later. Do you remember what year cement siding was introduced or when the first sliding compound miter saw hit the market? No matter what year you first strapped on a tool belt, this look back through three decades of NEB and JLC is sure provide moments of both comic reflection and sober realization.
