In this house, designer David Jameson wanted to combine the client's enthusiasm for modern structures with the traditional houses of the neighborhood. The judges said the result looks like a collage of "toy blocks" that respects the scale of the original 1947 single-story rambler.
Rising from the existing foundation is a structure with two wings, one gabled, the other curved-roofed, connected by a "circulation box." The curved front facade resembles a traditional front porch and, together with the classic gabled wing, provides an elevation that mixes well with the traditional neighborhood.
Jameson also played with a mix of textures, covering the gabled wing in stucco, the curved-roof wing in clapboard, and the sweeping entry in lead-coated copper.
