Hinged Miter. Rather than sliding back and forth on rails, Bosch's new GCM12SD 12-inch miter saw moves on hinges. The top hinge pivots on a horizontal axis to hold the saw head steady from side to side, and the bottom hinge has a vertical axis to support the saw head's weight. This arrangement moves with very low resistance, and should remain accurate longer than sliding mechanisms, according to the company. Unlike typical sliders, the saw can sit flat against a wall and still maintain its 14-inch crosscut capacity. It lists for $699. Bosch, 877/267-2499. www.boschtools.com
