Putting a roofing twist on a German road paver technology, Boral Roofing brand MonierLifeTile has developed a roofing tile that helps neutralize pollutants around a home. The “smog-eating” BoralPure tile is made of minerals with an inorganic surface, and incorporates a light-activated catalyst that speeds up oxidation of pollutants. Here’s how it works:
- Toxins from vehicle-generated smog settle on the roof
- Catalysts in the tile neutralize the pollutants into mostly nitrogen
- Converted particles remain on the roof until rain flushes them to the ground where they can serve as fertilizer
- Available on concrete tile with clay forthcoming
- Installs the same as standard roofing tiles
