Double-sided peel-and-stick tile underlayments are gaining acceptance as easy-to-use materials that speed up small tiling jobs by eliminating the need for mortar. Though the materials have a DIY angle, manufacturers note a range of benefits for remodelers and their trades. “For professional tilers, the material helps gain speed on smaller jobs, like a tile backsplash that they might otherwise ignore,” says Rob Madore, Bondera product manager at Grace Construction Products. “Now they can take on those jobs or finish more jobs in a week if they’re using it regularly. A remodeler could also train a worker with less experience to do small tile projects.” The peel-and-stick basics for products across this new category are the same: remove the backing and adhere the material to the wall, plan your tile pattern, expose the front layer of adhesive, press the tile into place, and grout. But there are differences between the products. Here are two to consider. —Lauren Hunter, associate editor, REMODELING. Trick of the Light With a new application for its dichroic thin-film technology, the Modono Glass Tile collection adds shimmer and style to tile installations. An optical film coating on the inside of the glass affects the way the tile transmits, reflects, and absorbs specific light wavelengths for a color-changing effect. Tile sizes range from 3-by-3 inches to 12-by-28 inches. Each of four series offers a unique pattern.
