Always hated to cut concrete or brick. Something tells me it would have been much easier with this tool!

For those who claim that a house must breathe, this is essentially the lungs for your house. This machine provides fresh air for each room in your house, while exhausting stale air to the outdoors. The beauty is that it recovers the heat from the air being exhausted and warms the incoming air. Very quiet and very efficient it uses only about 25 watts of energy during its standard running mode.

OXX has come up with coffee maker made for the rigors of a jobsite. Fresh hot coffee on a cold January morning? Wish this had been around when I was banging nails!

Just trimmed three windows and had to cut the trim for the flanges. This stuff would have saved me a bunch of time!

I saw this product and it took me back to the house I grew up in in Rhode Island. My dad bought what he called “false beams” and glued them to the ceiling of our living room. He would have loved these!

This tape is supposed to be a lot stronger than conventional mesh or paper. Might be just the ticket for those drywall cracks that keep coming back.

Not sure what this game was all about, but kids got into this chamber and tried to catch pieces of material flying around. The things you see at JLC Live!!!

This stuff has supposedly been around for a while, but I’d never seen it before. Seems like a no-brainer alternative to the black goop that I get all over my hands every time I do a roof repair.

With all of its toxic chemicals, pressure-treated wood decking scares me a bit. And Ipe is pretty, but its rain forest wood. But then I came across Kebony at JLC Live made from sustainably grown and harvested pine. That wood then goes through a heat treatment that changes the wood at a cellular level making it resistant to rot. Much friendlier alternative to conventional treated wood decking!

I just upgraded a bunch of outlets and switches in my house—and then saw these smart night lights from Snap. The LED light is integrated into the outlet cover and the LED bulbs use almost no electricity. The ones I saw at JLC Live were also dimmable. These guys are moving up the ladder on my house wishlist!!

At the end of the afternoon yesterday I took my “shopping” hat off and put my “editor/photographer” hat on. I needed a few extra shots for an upcoming article on using brakes. Tom Struble was at the Building Technology Clinic where he’d set up a brake. Tom walked me through forming a half dozen different shapes while I frantically snapped photos. Believe it or not, it was the first time I’d really seen the process of bending metal on a brake and Struble is an artist with the tool! Thanks Tom!!!
JLC Expo slideshow. Meanwhile, JLC senior editors Roe Osborn and Chris Ermides got a chance to walk the show floor, snapping pics and talking it up with a host of friends of JLC. They give us a quick look at this collection of curious finds (click on slideshow link at left).
