Data can capture trends for those who depend on design insights to interest clients and can reveal intimate details about consumer tastes and desires. In its Trend Watch: Outdoor Spaces, Wayfair Professional tracked search habits of millions of Wayfair customers to provide data that identify the biggest trends in outdoor spaces.

With homeowners sheltering-in-place as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, outdoor spaces are taking on a more important role as an extension of the living area. Homeowners are often looking to create multipurpose spaces for working, cooking, relaxing, and connecting with nature.

The Outdoor Spaces report, based on year-over-year (YOY) Wayfair search data from January 2019 through March 2020, includes the following takeaways:

  • Consumers are more interested in patio doors than at the beginning of 2019. Searches for French patio doors are up 142% YOY and searches for glass patio doors are up 227% YOY.
  • The desire to create outdoor kitchen spaces is increasing. Homeowner searches for outdoor kitchen islands increased 130% YOY and searches for modular outdoor kitchens increased 66% YOY.
  • In addition to searching for outdoor kitchens, homeowners are more interested in spaces for outdoor relaxation than in 2019. Searches for concrete fire pits increased 173% YOY, searches for outdoor gas fire pits increased 99% YOY, and searches for outdoor bar products increased 155% YOY.
