Insect Shield makes work apparel that has been impregnated with a bug repellent to keep ticks and other biting insects at bay, even after dozens of washings.
Shirts, pants, and other articles of clothing have been treated with a proprietary formulation of permethrin, a compound that is effective against ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, mosquitoes, and no-see-ums and has been registered with the EPA since 1979. It’s used in lice shampoos, flea treatments, and a number of other products including West Point Military Academy uniforms, which the company has been treating since 2002. The odorless compound is designed to last through 70 washing cycles—about the life expectancy of the garment. Treated clothing can even be bleached, starched, and pressed without affecting its effectiveness, the company says.
On the company’s website, products and prices range anywhere from a twill work shirt for $46, to mid-weight work socks for $8, to a ball cap for $19. The company stocks both men’s and women’s sizes.
