The inventor is Gregg Imus, who says his 35 years of experience building custom homes and replacing rotted decks gave him the idea for the cap. It consists of a 26-gauge metal strip with a peel-and-stick waterproof butyl rubber adhesive. He says the Imus Cap is easier to apply than the peel-and-stick products already on the market, and the metal surface can be painted.
The cap is designed to eliminate trapped water between decking and joists, which can lead to decay. There's no need to predrill for deck screws and hidden fasteners.
Imus said in a press release that he's used joist tape products in the past but found it was time-consuming and difficult to apply them, especially on elevated decks.
The Imus Cap is available in three widths (1 5/8 inches, 3 5/8 inches, and 5 5/8 inches). Pieces are 8 feet long. Prices range from $12 to $28 per piece, depending on width. Imus Cap can be ordered on the company's website.
