This 9-foot-high deck in Warren, N.J., was built for a prominent area landscaper who was looking for a deck to be a true extension of his home's living space. A covered area for eating, an area for entertainment, and an area for lounging were all at the top of his request list.

Bill Wilson, co-owner of Amazing Decks, designed a composite deck that “married the house to the yard.” It features a covered dining area with a television, a smaller uncovered dining space, and a curved staircase that leads to a patio with a fire pit and small waterfall.

Synthetic deck boards were chosen for this large-scale project because of their low maintenance. In the design, Wilson used variegated boards in circular patterns to designate the differing sections of the deck. This also made the outdoor flooring feel like the indoors.

Underneath the high structure, the deck builder made a space for storage. Since it’s watertight, the owners have usable space under the deck to store whatever they please.

“A deck is no longer a place where you just smoke a cigarette; it’s an extension of the heart of the home,” Wilson says. “Homeowners are looking for televisions, sound systems, and almost anything they have in their homes, outdoors.”
