New, lower design valueslower will take effect June 1, so this summer you could see your suppliers delivering slightly different floor and roof trusses or rafters made from Southern pine. Trusses might require extra wood than before or not span as far as in the past.
Design values are the official standards of strength and flexibility that can be expected from a species. The reduction in values for Southern pine comes after tests found that changes in the way the wood is grown, harvested, and sawn have affected its strength. —Craig Webb, editor-in-chief, REMODELING.
