The average tradesman owns a single impact driver and uses it for everything from big lags to small screws. The problem with tools capable of driving that range of fasteners is a lack of control; drive too fast or let your attention wander and you’ll damage the surface or destroy the screw you are driving. Makita’s XDT09 is designed to drive with both power and control. Power comes from the brushless motor. Control comes from having three speed and impact ranges and a feature known as Quick-Shift Mode. In Quick-Shift an electronic controller detects the amount of torque being applied to the fasteners and automatically downshifts from 3rd to 2nd speed just before driving it home—which is particularly useful for driving sheet metal and self-tapping screws. The Quick-Shift mode is engaged by pushing a button on the base of the handle. Features include an LED light, a three-stage battery gauge, and a very short head that fits in tight spaces.
