Over the last century, engineers and construction pros have been increasingly using rebar to build stronger and more resilient concrete structures. The quantity and demand for this type of construction isn’t slowing down anytime soon with major infrastructure projects planned and underway, plus the resurgence of commercial building post-pandemic. These projects don’t just require rebar, but also demand an increasing number of anchors that require more holes drilled in reinforced concrete.
Dust generation is an unavoidable byproduct of concrete drilling, that creates a number of problems. The biggest problem is keeping sites compliant, clean and safe. Diablos AMPED Rebar Demon system offers a solution that eliminates up to 97% of the dust and debris generated by drilling tasks, allowing for cleaner jobsites and saves time to make the borehole clean and “anchor-ready.” Installing chemical and mechanical anchors in concrete can be a highly labor-intensive process with complex instructions and multiple steps. Diablo’s system streamlines what would otherwise be a five-step process using multiple bits down to two steps: Drill the hole with one bit and place the anchor.
For chemical anchors, the typical process of blowing out, brushing clean, and re-blowing out the hole before applying epoxy is labor intensive and requires two extra tools to keep on hand at the work site (brush and air pump). Estimates show up to 66% in labor savings when contractors eliminate the old “blow-brush-blow" method of anchor installation. Manufacturer, Simpson Strong-Tie, has already recognized Diablo’s new system as an approved option for Strong-Tie epoxy anchors (AT-3G, ET-3G or SET-3G). The dust extraction ability of the new bit also cleans the hole as it drills, increasing the speed (up to 3X faster compared to standard hammer drill bits) at which large drilling jobs can be completed.
As all pros know, the speed at which the product can perform the job is only half the battle. The other half is downtime due to tool failure and replacement. The Diablo system is a durable, one-bit system that lasts up to 7X longer than standard 2-cutter hammer drill bits, drilling not only the concrete but chewing through rebar, as well. This versatile durability can save up to $75 (SDS Plus) or $200 (SDS Max) per bit on replacement costs.
In civil engineering work on tunnel, bridge, and other infrastructure projects, concrete and rebar drilling is always part of a larger, complex schedule and project budget, and delays can be incredibly costly. When encountering unseen rebar while drilling, the head of an ordinary carbide bit can snap off or dull quickly. Previously, the only other option contractors had was to use two different bits – a specialized rebar cutter and a standard hammer drill bit for concrete. However, this requires valuable time and effort to change the bits. In contrast to this slow method, Diablo’s system, completely eliminates the need for two separate bits and avoids the costly delay of dealing with broken and dull bits.
For contractors working on electrical, HVAC, and general construction, the benefits of the dust extraction system are also clear. When drilling overhead and installing smaller diameter anchors an innovative dust cap and spring mechanism keeps the system flush and eliminates nearly all falling dust (available in 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-inch sizes).
AMPED Rebar Demon eliminates common challenges of dust heavy jobsites, heavy labor and time costs, and bit longevity in the toughest drilling applications.
Diablo’s AMPED Rebar Demon range includes hammer bits, covering a range of sizes (15) plus a removable, re-usable adapter for both SDS-Plus and SDS-Max bits:
SDS-Plus range: 5/16 to 3/4 in. & SDS-Plus Adapter
SDS-Max range: 7/8 to 1-1/4 in. & SDS-Max Adapter
