Metal drilling is a common task whether you are a remodeler plumber, electrician, mechanical contractor or almost any trade. Often, you don’t know what thickness or type of metal you’ll need to drill until it’s too late—when you’re already on site, up a ladder, or far from your truck, ready to work. It makes the work go a lot smoother if you have the right bit and it’s up to the task to leave a clean hole or holes quickly. So why is metal drilling such a tedious, expensive and painful activity on the job? Let’s drill down.

Variety of Materials

On a jobsite these days you will encounter mild steels, aluminum, hardened steels and of course stainless steel. The rise of the multi-family home construction also calls for more metal. To drill holes for anchoring, fastening repair, installation, ventilation, or fabrication you will need a bit that can drill cleanly through a variety of metals and still get the job done in wood and plastic.

Current Bit Options

This is not your first job so of course you will have a drill bit ready to rock through metal. The issue? Currently the market is confusing, oversaturated, lacking in quality and at the top end a very costly purchase. There’s black oxide bits which can be quite affordable but only do well in mild steels and typically heat up quickly when drilling. Next up there are many “titanium” options that reduce heat and corrosion but again only penetrate mild steel and will struggle with stainless or hardened materials. These bits are typically a piece of high-speed steel coated in Titanium Nitride that can wear off over time and use. If you want to pay a premium you can always upgrade to a cobalt drill bit that will go through hardened and stainless steel with good heat reduction. Cobalt bits tend to be more brittle and can cost up to 30% to 50% more.

Poor design, confusing messaging, and the pain (monetary and otherwise) of keeping multiple styles and different sizes of each bit. It seems there should be a better solution and now ther

ONE and Done

Diablo Tools has introduced a ONE Bit solution to metal drilling that cuts through mild steels, stainless steels, cast iron, copper, wood and more. The Metal Demon™ series of drill bits is designed to replace the current hassle of confusing bit options and consolidate your toolbox to dominate with simplicity. Not only does Metal Demon™ take on the toughest metals but it works fast with a cutting edge tip that cuts not grinds . This design can lead to up to 2X faster holes vs. the competition. The Metal Demon™ is productive lasting up to 30X longer than an average bit by utilizing a Thermal Shield Protective Coating™. Now that’s ONE for the money, actually up to $230 in savings on average per one Metal Demon™ bit*.
