Chrysler recently issued recalls for two separate problems that could case front and side airbags to spontaneously deploy.

Recall R36 applies to certain 2012-2014 Ram trucks equipped with the Electronic Vehicle Information Center option. The steering wheel wiring harness in affected vehicles may rub against the driver air bag module retainer spring—which can lead to an electrical short that causes the driver’s side air bag to deploy unexpectedly. The recall applies to approximately 1 million Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks and is separate from the airbag-related recall issued in May of this year for approximately 4 million 2005-2011 Chrysler vehicles (including certain Ram and Dakota models). The company will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, repair as necessary, and secure the steering wheel wiring harness. Additionally, protective caps will be added to the air bag retainer spring ends. The recall is expected to begin September 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

Recall R23 applies to certain 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. A software issue in the modules that control the side curtain airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioner may cause the airbags to deploy for no reason. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update (reprogram) the Occupant Restraint Control module calibration, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
