The state of the art in pest control is
called integrated pest management
(IPM). This movement began as a response
to several factors, including the
federal government's banning of some
highly effective but environmentally
disastrous pesticides and the public's
increasing concerns about toxic materials.
The pests had something to do
with it, too, by genetically developing
resistance to particular pesticides at a
rate that made control by chemicals
alone impractical.
The IPM strategy was developed by
entomologists and filtered down to the
pest-control industry. The idea was to
