Existing home sales were up 8.3% in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, the National Association of Realtors reported. But compared with the first quarter of last year, sales drooped 0.8% to an annual rate of 5.14 million (seasonally adjusted). Home prices also fell, as distressed homes continued to account for more than a third of sales.
