Jeff Kann, president of Houseworks, in San Francisco, is part of the REMODELING's Big50 class of 2012. We asked Kann our "5 Questions," and this is what he told us.

REMODELING: What has been your biggest challenge over the past year?
Jeff Kann: Educating prospective clients about pricing that sounds too good to be true. The recent economic troubles have created an environment where many track home builders reduced staff. These builders, or their employees, have flooded our market offering below-cost pricing. Many consumers, especially first-time remodelers, do not understand the pitfalls of working with someone who does not understand their costs. This creates situations where there are corners being cut, or large change orders to “course correct” after construction begins.

RM: What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment since entering the remodeling field?
JK: Creating long-lasting positive relationships and a solid reputation for our company based on great quality work combined with excellent customer service.

RM: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
JK: Dream big!

RM: What is the worst advice you’ve ever been given?
JK: You can’t do that ...

RM: If you could change one decision you’ve made in the last 10 years, what would it be?
JK: If I could turn back the clock I would not have had a business partner and would have started the company myself.
