While sheltering-in-place during the coronavirus pandemic, nearly four in five homeowners reported they've noticed home improvement projects they need to take care of, according to research commissioned by Leviton. The study, conducted by OnePoll, found the most common updates homeowners are dreaming of include updated kitchen countertops and cabinets and smart home technology. Three in five respondents also reported their lighting, switches, and outlets need to be upgraded.

According to the study, the average person has six repairs or updates they would like to make to their home. Homeowners reported home improvement projects piled up because of a lack of time, knowledge, and money, as well as a shortage of knowledge and willpower among homeowners. The study of 2,000 homeowners found the average person would need $680.10 to complete their top three in-home repairs.

Nearly 60% of respondents reported completing repair or renovation projects on their own in the past and, of that cohort, nearly 70% admitted their projects did not turn out as planned. The most common mistake from DIY projects, according to the OnePoll study, is incorrect assembly. Other common setbacks include buying the wrong pieces, injuries, and projects not looking as planned. Around 10% of respondents reported finished DIY projects made spaces look worse than before the project.
