With homeowners across the United States confined to their homes during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many are shifting their preferences for their current living conditions. A survey of 1,300 consumers by Realtor.com indicates many homeowners and renters pine for more space, updated kitchens, and home gyms in their current home. The survey also indicated that 32% of consumers have taken on some home improvement project while sheltering in place.

Homeowners spending more time at home are learning they would like to change various elements to improve livability. One in five respondents indicated more space is a top desire in their current home, while 13% reported wanting an upgraded kitchen. Over 10% of respondents said they want a home gym, and respondents also reported wanting an updated style for their home, more natural light, and a yard.

A larger share of male respondents wanted more space, and women were more likely to want to upgrade their kitchen, according to Realtor.com. More space is most desired by respondents in the 35-to-54 age cohort and respondents in youngest age cohort (18 to 34 years old) were most likely to want a home gym, natural light, and a yard or patio. Consumers in the 55+ age cohort were most likely to place a priority on updates to the kitchen, house style, and more space.

The Realtor.com survey indicated one third of respondents have attempted at least one home improvement project while sheltering at home during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Painting walls and redecorating were among the most popular projects among consumers who had undertaken a home improvement project or those who are planning to do so. Parents of minor children were more likely to redecorate a room and add an office, workspace, or workout space.
