U.S. demand for decking is projected to increase 1.8% annually through 2020, as homeowners who postponed decking projects following the recession now proceed with new or expanded decks.* With so many choices in decking materials, homeowners look to deck builders for help understanding the pros and cons of each.

Hollow-core PVC decking is a popular choice, thanks to its durability and relatively low maintenance. PVC decking in particular provides compelling benefits against the harshest deck abuser – Mother Nature.

Water
Moisture can wreak havoc with decks in many ways. PVC does not absorb water and is therefore impervious to rot. Compared against wood and composite decking, which often has one or more organic filler that is adversely affected by water, hollow-core PVC will not retain water. However, dirt and pollen allowed to accumulate on PVC decking may result in mold or mildew growth, especially in shady, damp areas of the deck. Before heavy buildup is allowed to occur, a little water, soap and slide of the mop will eradicate the issue.

For decks around pools or hot tubs, slip resistance is always a concern. Hollow-core PVC is typically extruded with a woodgrain pattern. Not only does this embossing lend a natural look to the boards, it also makes them slip-resistant.

Keeping an uncovered deck completely free of water is next to impossible. However, hollow-core PVC decking can be installed as a water shedding surface. Rather than installing with the typical 1/8” – 1/4” spacing between boards, the boards snap completely together with a backing rod in between. Some types of hollow-core PVC decking have integrated channels that divert water to the end of the board. A water-shedding deck that is elevated has the added benefit of keeping the space below fairly dry, effectively providing the homeowner more usable outdoor space.

Sun
Hot decks don’t feel good on bare feet. Hollow-core PVC decking has inherently high UV resistance, lessening the heat gain and making it slower to fade. Darker decks are trending now, but the darker the color, the more the heat gain and retention. Darker decks also tend to show fading and visual abrasion more so than lighter-colored decks.

PVC is not impervious to the sun’s impact. Vinyl will fade in a uniform manner over time; depending on the resin used, it may develop a slight yellow or blue tint. It is most noticeable in white boards, while tan and brown disguise it well.

Hollow-core PVC is subject to expansion and contraction. Consult with individual manufacturer installation guides for the recommended acclimation prior to installation as well as spacing and fastening.

In general, the less a decking material responds to water and temperature, the longer it will last.

Weight and force
Hollow-core PVC decking is generally lighter than solid wood and wood composites. Contractors may appreciate this aspect of the product when building elevated or rooftop decks. However, hollow-core PVC decking is more subject to surface damage like gouging and denting than solid products. Compare manufacturer impact testing reports if this is an area of concern. Hollow-core PVC boards that become damaged cannot be filled like most solid products, and require replacement of the full board.

With so many material options for creating the deck of your dreams, in addition to aesthetics, think about maintenance and longevity. Hollow-core PVC is an ideal decking material thanks to its weather resistance, high color retention, low heat retention, and almost maintenance-free durability.
