DIY Technologies (a subsidiary of MiTek) now offers a free, cloud-based interactive software package (for PCs running Windows OS) that allows contractors to design every aspect of their next deck project in collaboration with their customer. Called USP Deck Designer the easy-to-use software provides its users with a wide range of capabilities, including:
- identifying local building codes and structural requirements
- generating project layout sheets
- creating cut sheets and material lists
- identifying and locating specific manufacturer’s products at local retail and building material stores
Customization of every aspect of deck design and construction is possible no matter the size, complexity, or number of requested adjustments. This software tool will save deck pros time and money by eliminating costly mistakes and making each revision easy as well as accurate.
Simplify The Design Process
USP Desk Designer, offers tools that allow the user to select and adjust the shape of each deck whether it is a multi-level structure, a deck that accommodates spas, trees or walls, or one that needs to be ADA-compliant. The design process is further simplified as photos of the house can be imported to aide in precise design and materials specification. At any point in the design process, the contractor is able to share each plan with clients, encouraging collaboration, and eliminating much of the guesswork from the process.
Foolproof Features
During design, users can zoom in or out at any point simply by using a mouse, and each plan can be viewed in either 3D or 2D (plan view) at any time. Adjustments made to each plan can be manipulated using push-in or push-out features and a “nudging tool” for micro adjustments, down to the inch. USP Deck Designer offers control over the fine points of deck design, such as the direction (and material type) of deck planks, deck color, and other customizable features.
For the structural design of the deck, users set the footer depth, the optimum wood length, and view the live and static loads for the deck. Since all decks require fasteners, USP Deck Designer shows the fastener types and locations as well. Any of these features can be used just once, or set as a default for all future projects.
When a user registers (for free), USP Deck Designer can help make the best possible recommendations based on local codes and building trends. Final designs can be saved, printed and emailed, edited, and exported as a CSV (Excel) file. Once the deck design is finalized, USP Deck Designer creates a printed report that provides complete materials and cut lists. The printed report can be used for permit submittals and design review.
