Remember the old saying “You can have it fast, affordable or good, pick any two”?

Whoever came up with it hadn’t visited a cold-formed steel building.

When bidding on simple storage structures, a cold-formed steel building system should be a go-to consideration for machine sheds, small airplane hangars, hay storage facilities, carports, RV garages, or any metal structure that could benefit from a healthy dose of fast, affordable and good.

Why cold-formed steel? It starts with the science behind it. When strip or sheet steel is cold- formed at room temperature, steel strength increases. The result? A strong, lightweight, and easily adaptable steel structure that meets dozens of owner requirements.

The system isn’t for every project. But for the dozens of applications it is, it’s a structural marvel. It checks boxes like no pole-barn, red iron building, weld-up or wood structure can quite match.

Just ask Shelby Shipman.

Shipman runs the cold-formed steel building operation of Cornerstone Building Brands, a premier manufacturer of residential and commercial exterior building solutions. “The idea of cold-formed steel buildings isn’t new,” Shipman describes. “The concept came over from New Zealand some years ago. What is new is creating a design, fabrication and delivery system that takes full advantage of its benefits.” The Cornerstone Building Brands solution is called Hypersteel cold-formed buildings.

Looking to win a bid on a simple agricultural, industrial or commercial building? Cold-formed steel might be an unfair competitive advantage. Shipman explains why:

● Fast delivery. “You might be looking at a year more or less as lead time for delivery of a typical pre-engineered metal building,” Shipman says. “We’re telling people four weeks for cold-formed steel structure, though right now we deliver in 10 business days, minus the doors and insulation.” Lead times may vary by project scope and will be provided upon order acknowledgement.

● Foundation specs included. No engineering third-party required. Shipman says cold-formed steel assemblies come with engineered-stamped concrete foundation specs included. There’s no mystery about concrete slab thickness or what’s required for the foundation. “Contractors love that planning shortcut,” notes Shipman.

● Easy assembly. All primary and secondary structural frame components are made with cold-formed steel, meaning precisely fabricated for fit and lightweight versus hot-rolled steel. “Less weight reduces the need for large assembly teams, heavy equipment or specialized trades,” reports Shipman, adding anyone with basic construction skills and knowledge of construction best practices can assemble a cold-formed steel structure.

● Meets code. The Hypersteel team works with you to ensure your structure meets all building codes and structural load requirements when properly installed and maintained.

● All-conditions resilience. Shipman says Hypersteel cold-formed buildings meet the strength and structural requirements to withstand winds, snow loads, earthquakes and hurricanes based on local building codes. The material also resists pests, termites, fire, mold and corrosion.

● Size versatility. Bid on any structure with up to a 70-foot width and 28-foot height. There is no length limit. “Larger building spans are on the way,” advises Shipman.

“If you’re doing pole barns and looking for something more sustainable or are used to turning down work on smaller buildings because they take too much time, the Hypersteel cold-formed buildings system is something you need to look into,” Shipman says.

“This is a building system without many compromises for speed, price or quality. It’s an easy sell to owners.”
